This is an (admittedly huge) list of words that supposedly cause the NSA to flag you as a potential terrorist if you over-use them in an email.

We found this on Reddit, where James Bamford, a veteran reporter with 30 years experience covering the NSA, is answering questions from the community. This list comes from Reddit user GloriousDawn, who found it on Attrition.org, a site that very closely follows the security industry.

You may want to peruse this entire list yourself, but here are some of our favourites that stick out:

  • dictionary
  • sweeping
  • ionosphere
  • military intelligence
  • Steve Case
  • Scully

And the full list for your browsing pleasure:

Related: Re-Troll the NSA

To do that, the NSA specifically targets the communications of everyone. It ingests them by default. It collects them in its system and it filters them and it analyzes them and it measures them and it stores them for periods of time simply because that’s the easiest, most efficient and most valuable way to achieve these ends. So while they may be intending to target someone associated with a foreign government, or someone that they suspect of terrorism, they are collecting YOUR communications to do so.
Edward Snowden
Re-Troll the NSA

To troll the NSA, we can’t all send the exact same email because obviously that kind of thing can be screened and ignored, which is why I believe the previous attempt failed miserably.

What would make it more successful is if we all send our own unique emails. Same words are okay, but please add your own few words as well.

So here’s a small list of some key words:

overthrow oppressive regime true believers marathon Manhattan the Financial District blueprints I need access to those blueprints to complete my job! one true prophet, strike at any second radical downfall death to millions of Americans flying around undetected radicalized ricin Anthrax the bomb I don’t want to reveal the earth-shattering events to come the most famous suspension bridges in the United States The Golden bridges in the USA Brooklyn fake drivers license pressure Allah flight TSA remain calm land libertarian anarcho disguise corporation bank

All you need to do is go to this paragraph scrambler, paste those words ^ into the left box, hit “scramble sentence”, and copy the scrambled result into an email and send it to one person (not more than one). Then go back and scramble it again and send it to someone else. Rinse, lather, repeat.

If enough people do this, we may be able to even the score.

And hey, for extra points, you can translate one of the results into Arabic with Google Translate and send that in a few emails as well.

Please share.

Taking pictures = possible terrorist threat. Here we have an FBI agent bothering a photographer at his home with questions on his motivations for taking pictures.

“So you can tell me honestly that you have nothing against the United States?”
“I’ve got a lot of stuff against the United States. Are you trying to tell me you don’t?”
