The image pictured above is from March 7, 1965 at the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama. Police brutally attacked peaceful demonstrators who were attempting to march from Selma to Montgomery to call for equal voting rights for African Americans. The CBS news live coverage of the police violence that day horrified the nation, and President Lyndon Johnson seized upon the opportunity to push the Voting Rights Act to passage. That day was dubbed “Bloody Sunday”.
