TUKWILA, WA (KIRO/CNN) - Police officers are accused of brutally beating two young men and then refusing them medical attention - and the whole incident was recorded on the officers’ video camera.
After responding to a call about a fight, officers found brothers Charles Chappelle and Jahmez Amili walking near the edge of the road. The officers claim that the men were intoxicated, showing erratic behavior, and refusing orders, according to their police report.
The two men admit they had been drinking, but deny that they were refusing orders.
“I had my hands raised in the air and I was complying with the officer,” said Chappelle.
But on the video, police officers rushed the two men and beat them to the ground. The video recording shows Amili’s bloodied face as he is being led to the police car.
“I was just trying to make sure I stayed alive because I really felt like I was about to die,” Amili said.
The police arrested the two men for obstructing a justice, resisting arrest, and assaulting a police officer. But the men were brought to the jail, guards refused to admit them because they needed immediate medical attention.
Although the police wrote in their report that Chappelle and Amili were taken to the hospital, but Chappelle claims the officers simply took them to the garage of the hospital and washed their faces with water and then drove them around with the windows down to decrease the swelling in their faces.
Finally, two hours after jail guards refused to admit the men because they needed medical attention, they were brought to the jail and booked.
“Basically, it was like I was kidnapped,” said Amili. “Just because you’re the police, I don’t think you should be able to drive around with people for five hours and beat them to death because you’ve got power.”
Chappelle and Amili’s family filed a formal complaint and the police say they are conducting an internal investigation.
The charges related to the case against Amili were recently dismissed by a judge and are still pending for Chappelle.
